Service Description

Why are there two Samoan governments? This course is an overview of the major political events that led to the division of the Samoan islands. Germany and later New Zealand occupied the western islands and the United States of America took over the eastern islands. We will highlight the introduction of new foreign political systems and the changes in Samoa’s chiefly authority (matai system). Upon completing this course, students will be able to: 1. Understand the pre-1900 Samoan chiefly (matai) system before colonial rule; 2. Appreciate the divisions of the two Samoa’s took place; 3. Discuss major themes related to the political, social, and cultural changes; 4. Learn the responses of Samoans during this political transition. This class will link to the next course "Tracing Your Roots"
